Mother Theresa

“Give me the strength to be ever the light of their lives, so that I may lead them at last to you,” she wrote in prayer. Mother Teresa-Mother Of All Who Was Born On 26 Aug 1910.

Mother Teresa said, “By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus.”

Here are some facts about Mother Teresa life:

1.Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu(Mother Teresa) was born in Macedonia to a financially comfortable Albanian family. Her father died when she was 8 years old.

2.By age 12, she was convinced that she should commit herself to religious life.

3.In 1928, at 18 years old, she joined the Sisters of Loreto in Dublin, Ireland. It was here that she took up the name Teresa in honor of  Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

4.Mother Teresa was transferred to the Sisters of Loreto convent in Darjeeling, India, after a year learning English in Ireland.

5.Teresa took her solemn vows on 14 May 1937 while she was a teacher at the Loreto convent school in Entally, eastern Calcutta. She served there for nearly twenty years and was appointed its headmistress in 1944.

6.In 1946 Teresa traveled to Darjeeling for a retreat. It was on that journey that she realized what her true calling was: “I heard the call to give up all and follow Christ into the slums to serve him among the poorest of the poor.”

7. In 1948 Sister Teresa started wearing simple sari and sandals and moved to a small rented hovel in the slums to begin her work.

8.On 7 October 1950, Teresa received  Vatican permission for the diocesan congregation, which would become the Missionaries of Charity.

9.The Missionaries of Charity Brothers was founded in 1963, and a contemplative branch of the Sisters followed in 1976.

10.Mother Teresa was honored with many awards throughout her life, from the Indian Padma Shri in 1962 to the inaugural Pope John XXIII Peace Prize in 1971 to Albania’s Golden Honour of the Nation in 1994… and, most famously, the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

11. She refused the traditional Nobel honor banquet, instead requesting that the $192,000 budget be given to help the poor of India.

12.Mother Teresa passed away on September 5, 1997, due to heart failure. She was buried on 13 September 1997 at The Mother House Of the Missionaries Of Charity, Kolkata, India.

13. After being beatified in 2003, Mother Teresa was canonized on Sep. 4, 2016.

14.In a ceremony at St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis declared her a Saint.
