Chandrayaan 3 : A Powerful Rover To Be Landing On Moon. The Chandrayaan-3 mission is a stepping stone towards ISRO’s Moon mission. It was launched by LVM3 from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota, India.

The launch of Chandrayaan-3 took place on 14 July 2023, at 2:35 pm IST and lunar injection of 100 km circular polar orbit was completed successfully as part of phase one. The lander and rover are expected to land near the lunar south pole region on 23 August 2023.

It consists of a lander named Vikram named after “Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai”, an Indian physicist and astronomer and a rover named Pragyan means “wisdom”, but does not have an orbiter.

Chandrayaan-3 consists of an indigenous Lander module (LM), Propulsion module (PM) and a Rover with an objective of developing and demonstrating new technologies required for Inter planetary missions.

The mission objectives of Chandrayaan-3 are:

  1. To demonstrate Safe and Soft Landing on Lunar Surface
  2. To demonstrate Rover roving on the moon and
  3. To conduct in-situ scientific experiments.

Once Chandrayaan-3 safely lands on the moon, the Pragyan rover will be deployed to explore. The rover will be released from Vikram using a ramp. This six-wheeled rover is powered by solar energy and carries two spectrometers to study the composition of the Moon’s surface.

Vikram Lander is equipped with four scientific instruments :

1.The first instrument is a seismometer designed to detect moonquakes,

2. The second one studies how heat moves through the lunar surface.

3. The third aims to understand the plasma environment around the moon, and

4. The fourth is a retroreflector to help understand the gravitational interaction between the Moon and the planet.

ISRO’s Chairman, Sreedhara P. Somanath, says that instead of a success-based design, they opted for a failure-based design for Chandrayaan-3. It is carefully designed to ensure a successful landing even in the event of certain components failing.

The successful completion of this mission would position India among a select group of nations, including the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union, to accomplish this milestone.
